Tailem Bend project to turn landfill waste into 20 per cent of state’s urea fertiliser needs as prices for critical supplies rise and fall chaotically, this South Australian firm says it can solve two major parts of the problem at once.
A South Australian company wants to use local woodchips and landfill waste to future-proof farmers’ fertiliser stocks as the Middle East conflict forces prices to skyrocket and supply plummet.
And it has in-principle support from the state’s grain industry, which is keen to be shielded from the “vulnerable global fertiliser supply chain”.
In a double benefit, the resource would be produced from council landfill waste and biomass.
Greenhill Energy, which is establishing a “green manufacturing” project at Tailem Bend, says it aims to initially produce 100,000 tonnes of urea, or about 20 per cent of the state’s requirements.
